I appreciate the risks of the postcard, the lovely,
inexact gesture of mailing one place to another
in a braggart’s way of meditation on not being home

& tonight will be flawless without you here with us
& it is only that reason, your absence, that we have
included you in our trip. Please, remind us to keep

you at this distance when we return home. Your voice
rises to interact with our pleasure in a way that slips,
lessens our ecstatic state. I should stop sending these.
